Gilson Global Impact Series presents:
From Haiti to Rwanda: Engineering Innovations for Revolutionizing
Third World Housing and Infrastructure
Tuesday, March 23, 2010
On January 12, 2010, an earthquake in Haiti showed the world how devastation by a natural disaster is magnified by poorly constructed housing and unplanned infrastructure. Today innovative engineers are developing construction materials and engineering practices to improve living conditions in Third World
countries, while promoting efficient use of resources around the planet.
Hear more about these cutting-edge efforts from passionate and socially-conscious engineers:
- Bhavna Sharma, a doctoral candidate at University of Pittsburg in civil and environmental engineering, who is promoting bamboo as a sustainable modern construction method in resource poor settings
- University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Engineers Without Borders chapter members, who have been working on structural engineering projects in Haiti, Rwanda and El Salvador
Join UW-Madison’s efforts to increase awareness and interest in socially responsible technology designed to benefit local and global communities. Learn how social responsibility multiplies the benefit of the innovation by making the technology accessible to low- and high-resource countries.
