Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist and professor of medicine Dr. Paul Limburg has joined Exact Sciences Corp. as co-chief medical officer.

Limburg, a co-leader of the Cancer Prevention and Control program in the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, will continue in his positions at Mayo in addition to his new role at Exact, company spokesman J.P. Fielder said.

“I look forward to working with the team at Exact Sciences to continue to expand the adoption of Cologuard and to offer guidance in building out the company’s cancer detection test portfolio,” Limburg said.

The nonprofit Mayo Clinic, based in Rochester, Minnesota, collaborated with Exact Sciences, of Madison, in developing the Cologuard DNA stool test for colorectal cancer. Mayo and Exact also are working on a series of tests to screen for other types of cancer and Limburg is part of that team, Fielder said.

Cologuard, approved by federal regulators in 2014, has been used to screen more than 1 million people, so far.
