GE HealthCare prepares to expand Milwaukee-area plant

GE HealthCare plans to expand its West Milwaukee plant by 35,000 square feet, the latest in a series of upgrades there.

An addition is planned to be constructed on the east building of the campus at 4855 W. Electric Ave., the company said Friday via email.

GE HealthCare (Nasdaq: GEHC) said the project is part of expansion plans announced in 2020 for the West Milwaukee campus. That announcement included upgrades to existing infrastructure and site additions.

The company has made significant progress on infrastructure upgrades to enhance production capacity and elevate product lines in West Milwaukee, GE HealthCare said.

“GE HealthCare’s Southeast Wisconsin campuses remain critical hubs for GE HealthCare operations and manufacturing for its customers worldwide,” the company said.

The company said in 2023 it was planning a 40,000-square-foot addition to the east side of the West Milwaukee plant, so the proposal moving forward now is a bit smaller.

"We continuously review project plans to ensure we are positioned to meet the demands of our customers while being good stewards of our resources," the company said.

The West Milwaukee Plan Commission is scheduled to consider a site plan for the addition at a meeting on Jan. 13. Also on the agenda is consideration of outside storage for GE HealthCare at the same address.

GE HealthCare's West Milwaukee investment

The West Milwaukee plant, which opened in 1947, makes CT components as well as tubes and detectors.

GE HealthCare said in early 2023 it had committed to investing $60 million in the West Milwaukee plant since September 2020. The plant manufactures components for CT systems that are assembled at a company plant in Waukesha.

As of early 2023, the investment in West Milwaukee resulted in a 15% increase in the headcount there by more than 200 production jobs, the company said at the time.

GE HealthCare also has invested heavily in its Waukesha campus and in July 2025 said it was well on its way to $100 million worth of projects there in recent years.
